Albany Engineered Composites (AEC) designs, develops, and
manufactures advanced composite components in order to help our
customers push the frontiers of innovation. Our core strength is
our ability to produce highly tailored, complex composite
components. With our unique blend of products -- including 3D woven
structures, traditional and non-traditional 2D composite
structures, and discrete through thickness reinforcement
technologies, to name a few -- AEC is able to produce composite
components and products which meet performance and cost
specifications often beyond the reach of metallic or conventional
laminated composites.
The Tooling Engineer focuses on the design, engineering and
management of production tooling for advanced composite structures
and assemblies. The tooling engineer works together with
manufacturing engineering and operations to create and optimize the
tool string for quality, cost and throughput. The engineer
communicates the tool requirements to potential suppliers through a
Statement of Work and associated supporting data (e.g. CAD models,
drawings, simulations, etc.) and participates in project tracking
efforts. He or she applies their knowledge, experience and
engineering techniques by providing solutions to engineering
problems for tooling, manufacturing and supplier processes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Designs and/or procures production tooling for complex
composite layup, RTM, machining and assemblies using specifications
or department/customer guidelines and requirements.
- Works cooperatively and effectively with operations,
manufacturing engineering, project engineers, quality engineers and
suppliers to optimize tools for ease of product manufacturing,
cost, and quality.
- Creates accurate 3D models, drawings and engineering data
(BOM's, tool inspection packages, preventative maintenance
requirements) required to communicate designs to suppliers,
operations and the customer.
- Applies theoretical knowledge and engineering techniques to
solve complex engineering problems related to tooling.
- Manages and dispositions tooling discrepancies, damage and
tooling related production issues. Determines and documents best
course of action to repair tools. Communicates and coordinates
required approvals through the customer.
- Implements tooling changes with input from the Integrated
Product Team.
- Maintains traceability for all tooling activities or events
related to tool procurement and maintenance.
- Analyzes root cause from team and recommends corrective actions
to tooling related issues.
- Considers safety, product assembly requirements, human factors
and throughput in tool design.
- Works with supply chain to procure tooling packages.
- Actively participates in initial production to prevent and/or
solve any tooling issues.
- Primary point of contact for supplier tooling technical
issues.EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/SKILLS
Position Competencies:
Knowledge:
- Relevant experience in design and procurement of production
tooling for complex aerospace layup, RTM, machining and assemblies
in an aerospace team environment.
- Experience in tool design for manufacturing by engaging
operations, manufacturing engineering and suppliers.
- Strong knowledge of GD T.
- Working knowledge of other related disciplines such as
assembly, machining, welding, and composite processes.
- Prefer a BA/BS degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
Experience may be substituted for education at management's
discretion.Skills:
- Experience with 3D CAD tools (CATIA V5)
- Ability to create, understand and interpret engineering
drawings
- Basic technical skills, theories and concepts related to the
design and development of tooling for high performance composites,
complex assemblies and structures.
- Prefer PTC Windchill
- Experience in clearly communicating project requirements,
design concepts and project status both verbally and written
(Microsoft Office).Abilities:
- Demonstrated history of creative problem solving in a team
environment.
