Utah Film Center is a Salt Lake City-based 501(c)3 that connects people, stories, and ideas through film and media arts. Founded in 2002, Utah Film Center presents films for cinema lovers of all ages, offers in-class and teacher focused education programs, and offers support for filmmakers. Last year, Utah Film Center served over 39,000 people. Through our programs we frequently explore the role of storytelling, cinema, art and artists in confronting key social issues of our time, combining and juxtaposing local and global perspectives. We strive to sustain, inspire, and provoke discussion around these topics. With our unique programming model, and resources, we strive to be a leader that helps define the role of cinema and media arts in Utah for the 21st century. Utah Film Center is interested in candidates who through their experience, qualifications, and skills can direct the organization's existing and yet to be created education and family programs into the future. These existing programs include: SHIFT Professional Development; In Your (Virtual) Classroom; Tumbleweeds Festival Field Trips, Film Spark, and the annual Tumbleweeds Film Festival for Kids. This Salt Lake City-based, full-time, exempt position includes paid holidays, paid time off, retirement plan, medical, and dental plans. Salary: $55,000 - $65,000 depending on experience PRIMARY FUNCTION As the primary advocate for the Film Center's K-12 education and family programs, the Director of Education and Family Programs leads efforts to sustain, create, implement, and evaluate innovative online and in person educational programs and public activities that connect film and media arts to young people and the lives they live. They will work closely with and report to the Executive Director and Managing Director and will play a key role in the artistic and strategic planning of the whole organization; initiate and sustain community partnerships to further the organization's mission; and contribute to audience development activities on behalf of Utah Film Center. Additionally, this position will manage assigned program budgets and staff, oversee all administration of the education and family programs, and actively seek ways to ensure the financial sustainability of these programs. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE --- An advanced degree (humanities, learning, arts education, media arts, film or a related field) and a minimum of five years of supervisory experience in a public-facing informal education role are required; or a comparable mix of education and experience. --- A track record of innovation and leadership is essential, as is demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary, and collaborative approaches to education focused programming and engagement. --- Experience overseeing the creation of effective and engaging online educational programs and resources is desirable. --- In-class teaching experience, particularly in K-12 settings, is preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES --- The Director of Education and Family Programs must have broad knowledge of informal, in-class and community-based education and engagement strategies. --- Proven skills initiating and sustaining community partnerships. --- Awareness of effective strategies for engaging diverse participants of all grade levels is required, including an understanding of human development, learning theories, school curriculum, and program design and evaluation. --- The ability to lead and inspire a diverse team of artists, contractors, and educators is essential. --- Excellent written and oral presentation skills are required, along with proficiency in budgeting, evaluation, planning, and reporting. --- Must be able to thrive in a complex, fast-paced, and multi-tasking environment. --- Evening and weekend hours may be occasionally needed if programs demand it. --- Familiarity with or willingness to learn project management and workplace chat applications, such as Google Suite, Salesforce, Asana and Slack. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES --- As a member of the Film Center's senior management team, takes a leadership role in defining and establishing the organization's K-12 educational philosophy and engagement strategies in keeping with the overall mission. --- Responsible for leading the design and development of a comprehensive strategic plan that includes a range of innovative online and in-person programs and offerings for K-12 students and teachers, and children and families. --- Actively establishes and nurtures existing collaborations and partnerships with government, foundation, and corporate partners to further the organization's mission, serve its community, and extend the impact of its programming, especially to new audiences. --- Establishes the philosophy and themes for the annual Tumbleweeds Film Festival for Kids; also oversees all of the non-film programs. --- Hires, mentors, supervises, and evaluates education department staff members, contractors, teaching artists, consultants, and volunteers (as required). --- Teaches the SHIFT and Film Spark workshops as required. --- Participates on planning teams for online initiatives, and other community-focused projects to align such efforts with the organization's educational philosophy and ensure effective and meaningful program delivery. --- Advises curatorial colleagues on their efforts to program film that meets Utah Film Center's educational philosophy. --- Oversees creation of descriptive copy about education programs and activities for marketing initiatives. --- Develops, manages, and reports on education-related budgets for departmental operations, programs, and grant funded projects. --- Oversees timely tracking and reporting of education programs and activities. --- Plays a significant role in fundraising for the education department, including identifying, contributing to, and reporting on grant-funded opportunities; also helps to cultivate and steward donors interested in education-related programs. --- Collaborates with the marketing department, education staff, consultants, and community partners to evaluate educational programs and activities; analyzes and responds to findings. --- Remains current with the latest film and media arts education practices, innovations, and research in the field; applies best practices to ensure the continued success of all educational initiatives and programs; endeavors to impart knowledge of best practices to colleagues across the organization. --- Collaborates with other Utah Film Center team members to identify and realize opportunities for interdisciplinary partnerships, including joint programmatic initiatives and new opportunities for generating earned and contributed revenue. --- Contributes to a variety of planning activities including but not limited to strategic planning, education advisory committee, and audience development initiatives. --- Undertakes other projects at the request of the Executive Director.
