Senior Program Manager - Aerospace

Client Summary:

Our client is a global, mid-sized, leading manufacturer of advanced composite components and aerostructures for several established and emerging fixed wing, rotor wing, missile, and other related airframe and engine defense and commercial platforms. Their core strength is their ability to produce highly tailored, complex composite parts and assemblies. Their products enable their customers to use lightweight, high-performance composites in applications where they previously have been restricted due to complex performance or geometry needs. Programs our client currently produces complex components for military and commercial aerospace applications, and they are currently pursuing future business in the Business Jet, UAV/UCAV, and Vertical Lift market spaces. Current business within their Salt Lake City Business Unit is approximately 80% defense / 20% commercial.

Position(s) Overview:
We are recruiting 3 Program Manager positions for our client, each at different levels, each with a different Program focus.


Senior PM - Commercial: This role will report to the Director of Program Management and will direct all phases of programs from inception through completion including the program management, development and closure of change proposals, scope growth opportunities, and cost reduction activities. Responsible for the safety, quality, schedule, technical performance, and cost (P&L responsibility) of company programs or subsystems of major programs. Acts as primary customer interface and is responsible for cultivating customer relationships. The position will also help provide support to the business management team in ensuring alignment and reconciliation between the program management and execution teams. The individual hired will hold P&L responsibility for Commercial Aerospace programs in the $30-50MM annual range. The position will be directly responsible for up to 2 "level 1" Program Managers. In addition to Program Management responsibilities, the person hired will also be responsible for the sale of Aftermarket Spares with distributor and airline customers.

Senior PM - Defense: This role will report to the Senior PM over a large Military Rotorcraft portfolio and will hold responsibility for a key program within the portfolio. This will be an individual contributor role focused on an up-and-coming new product. This includes New Product Introduction activities including facility design and implementation.

Level 1 PM - Defense: This role will report to a Senior PM working and will support 2 established programs and 1 new program for a major defense contractor.

Additional Responsibilities Include:

Note: The responsibilities below represent expectations for the Senior level opening:

Participating in the negotiation of contract and contract changes.
Coordinating the preparation of proposals, business plans, performance Statement of Work (SOW) and specifications, operating budgets, and financial terms/conditions of contract.
Acting as primary customer contact for program activities, leading program review sessions with customers to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance.
Establishing program Statement of Work and milestones; continually monitoring adherence to master plans and schedules, identifying program problems, and obtaining solutions, such as allocating resources or changing contractual specifications.
Leading new or established development, production, or services program(s) for major components or medium systems.
Program(s) may serve multiple customers and requires coordination of program requirements across planning stages with several subcontractors.
Measurement and reporting of program performance.
Applying advanced principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to provide solutions to a variety of program requirements. Requires coordination across program requirements.
Responsible for the financial risk associated with the execution of the program(s). The financial risks are dependent on the specifics of the program(s), such as program size/complexity, strategic importance, contract type, technical risk, profit margin, growth potential, interdependencies between programs that may lead to tradeoffs, etc.
Working closely with Business development to obtain new business or expand the product line with the customer.
Serving as primary customer contact for program information. May have primary responsibility for program growth, and be responsible for business development within the current customer base and/or for new customers. May manage proposal efforts.

Primary Position Requirement:

BS required in Engineering, Business, or Finance for any of the 3 position levels. MS desired. PMP is a plus.
Minimum Experience required:
Senior PM: 3+ years experience in a Program Management role within an Aerospace components or systems manufacturing environment is required. Some of this experience must be tied to commercial aerospace programs (mix of commercial/defense preferred). Strong leadership aptitude is required. Experience leading direct reports and/or mentoring preferred.
Level 1 PM: 1-2 years experience in Program Management within an Aerospace components or systems manufacturing environment is required. The client is also open to a candidate in an adjacent role, such as Project Engineering/Mgt who wants to shift into a PM role. Some experience must be tied to defense.
Demonstrated experience successfully meeting program deliverables (time, budget, etc---) and exceeding customer expectations required for Senior PM openings (preferred for Level 1).
Experience in program finance, program scheduling, budgeting, and proposal writing required for Senior PM openings (preferred for Level 1).
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including experience communicating effectively across the organization (up and down) and influencing others through a positive team-building style required.
Understanding of composite parts fabrication preferred.
Knowledge of government contracting and managing ITAR data is preferred.
LEAN training preferred.
Must be willing to support up to 25% travel (typically less than 10%).
Must be willing to work on-site 3-4 days per week on average (flex schedule supported but most of the team is onsite about 75% of the time currently).
