Principal Beverage ScientistThe Principal Low Acid is responsible for providing technical support to customers and internal teams for formulation solutions and application directions. The Principal Low Acid Scientist will be recognized internally as a subject matter expert (SME) in commercialization of all RTD beverage products (low acid) and will yield expertise in other areas as needed. Principal Low Acid Scientist will work onsite at the facility in Salt Lake City, UT.Main Job Functions:Develop, make, and evaluate finished product applications to support new product development efforts, including base development and stabilizationCoordinate and execute new product scale-ups for manufacturingHands-on work ethic in solving technical issues, bench work requiredWork closely with Sales/Marketing and cross-functional teams on commercializing innovations in formulations and ingredients and effectively communicating about customer projectsWill lead the commercialization of pilot plant and safely operate lab and pilot plant equipment related to UHT processing, spray drying, dry blending, and other areas as assignedDevelop and lead creative initiatives, successfully manage projects, and be recognized as a SME/technical liaison between internal and external stakeholdersIdentifies potential problems early in the development process and addresses them with appropriate solutionsWill oversee the set-up, design, and implementation of best lab practicesActively train direct reports and other team members in all aspects of low acid beverage development and commercializationAssist in hiring and building out low acid beverage innovation teamWorks with Supply Chain to source raw materials needed for the success of product developmentMay work with customers and co-packers to conduct pilot batches and scaled up product runsTechnical Qualifications:Education:MS in Food Science or related fieldExperienceMinimum of 7+ years commercial experience in variety of low acid beverage categories. Required experience in emerging categories such as coffees, teas, plant protein drinks, functional beverages, dairy based drinks, etc.Experience in flavor technology preferredExperience in setting up a pilot plant preferredRequired Competencies:Product DevelopmentScale-UpQuality and RegulatoryFlavor TechnologyDemonstrates attention to detailPrioritizes and uses time effectivelyOperating machinery: Benchtop sample preparation equipment, pilot equipmentAble to communicate with multiple internal and external groups effectivelyAble to do preventative maintenance or repair equipmentMust work well in group problem-solving situations and exhibit sound judgmentAbility to prioritize and use time effectively while managing competing demandsContribute to building a positive team spirit and display a high amount of professionalismGood communication skills. Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine correspondence, instructions, and procedures. Basic mathematical skills. Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Able to compute ratios and percentages. Demonstrates ability to self-manage. Consistently at work and on time.
