The Grid Integration group is responsible for siting and interconnecting the AES Clean Energy portfolio to transmission systems across the United States. The group consists of an Interconnection team, High Voltage Engineering team, SCADA/Communications team, and a Transmission Strategy team. AES Clean Energy is seeking an experienced Interconnection professional for the WECC region who is interested in a more dynamic project management role. The primary responsibilities of this role are strategic analysis of the interconnection procedures, queue and transmission system in a given RTO/ISO to formulate and steer greenfield project siting, and to then prepare and manage interconnection requests through to Interconnection Agreement with the most favorable terms possible. The Senior Interconnection Project Engineer is the regional lead for all interconnection requests within the assigned region, and takes ownership of the entirety of the interconnection process, working cross functionally with the broader Development team to optimize the position throughout the development lifecycle. The preferred candidate is well suited for leadership responsibilities and is expected to mentor and provide guidance to junior interconnection engineers and analysts working within the same region. Additional responsibilities during the execution stage of the projects includes monitoring the progress of required system upgrades and identifying creative mitigation solutions when needed within the applicable open access transmission tariff

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Interconnection Project Engineer will lead all interconnection activities through the full life cycle of development and construction of projects. The position will both lead and support as needed by internal stakeholders leading to the successful execution of both new and acquired projects across the United States. Some travel required (~20%).

Support greenfield development: review transmission system analysis, identify interconnection agencies and procedures, provide estimated budget and schedule of study process, prepare and file interconnection requests including managing internal and external parties on preparation of technical materials, provide viability feedback to management to support any financial approvals needed. Interconnection study process: review and analyze utility report scope of work, cost, and schedule; identify cost or time saving alternatives, tracking and reporting results throughout process, provide substation design criteria to High Voltage Engineering, negotiate and execute interconnection agreements and engineering and procurement agreements as needed to keep projects on schedule. Implementation of portfolio projects: lead and/or assist internal groups to complete deliverables required by transmission owners to construct interconnection facilities, integrate schedules of Transmission Owner into AES Clean Energy construction schedule. Analyze interconnection due diligence materials to support project acquisition efforts, identify existing and potential red flags.

Desired Skills and Expertise:

  • Ability to analyze power flow and system impact studies for interconnection of utility scale solar, wind, and battery storage generating facilities.

  • Preparation of interconnection request packages for submittal.

  • Familiarity with transmission systems and transmission expansion plans in US.

  • Open Access Transmission Tariffs and Generator Interconnection Procedures for WECC and adjacent regions.

  • Project management experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • 7+ years' work history in renewable or traditional energy development, or transmission planning. Previous employment or experience working with PacifiCorp, APS, SRP, CAISO, SCE, PG&E or SDG&E, or consultants providing services within those footprints is strongly preferred.
