This position assists Principal Investigators in their
Department/College by performing administration and technical
functions associated with grants, contracts, and other agreements
from external sources. The grants administrator also serves as a
liaison to the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), Institutional
Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
(IACUC), the Office of the Vice President and Research, and other
campus entities as necessary.
This position is for a Grant & Contract Officer on the Pre-Award
Team under the Vice President for Research Office. The office is
responsible for providing pre-award support for select departments
and colleges on the University of Utah Main Campus. The GCO
position will work directly with researchers in departments to
prepare research funding applications. This work may include
researching and answering questions about sponsor guidelines, being
aware of and understanding new grant mechanisms, working with the
researcher to create project budgets, assisting with formatting of
applications, providing feedback regarding sections of the
application, advising on University of Utah research policies and
procedures, monitoring award status, and working with the
departments and OSP on project set up for new projects.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Work directly with researchers to prepare and submit proposals,
which may include the following responsibilities:
* Research funding opportunities and sponsor guidelines
* Create a list of program requirements
* Provide templates and standard language
* Coordinate budget preparation and draft justification
* Assist in obtaining documents such as letters of support,
etc.
* Reviews proposals for completeness and adherence to institutional
& sponsor guidelines
* Act as a liaison with OSP, departments, and outside
institutions
* Support application development through submission portal
* Manage internal proposal requirements signatures, eProposal,
etc.
* Maintains a current knowledge of changing institutional policies
and federal requirements governing externally funded grants and
contracts
Essential Skills
* Manage multiple projects simultaneously while providing excellent
customer service and meeting deadlines.
* Ability to work independently, move projects and issues to
completion, and demonstrate a service orientation
Minimum Qualifications
* GED or HS Diploma
* Four years' related experience or a related Associate's
Degree.

essential functions of the job as outlined in the position

Preferences
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a
related field; two years experience working with federal or private
funding agencies on grants, contracts, or other agreements
(preferably within an academic or higher education complex), or
equivalency; (Eight years of work experience in administration,
accounting and/or general office supervision can be substituted for
the Bachelor's degree)
* The ability to work effectively and efficiently under extreme
pressure; and demonstrated communication and organizational skills
required.
* Work management skills or work history that includes managing
large projects.
* Experience with managing data, including strong skills in Excel
and other data management tools.
* University of Utah experience, especially familiarity with
University of Utah department administration (e.g. budgeting,
accounting, payroll, etc.).
* Research administration and/or grants and contracts experience
with NIH and NSF, in particular.
* A track record of working effectively with investigators and
department staff on grants and contracts.
