Job Description:
Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah ( HCI )is an
NCI Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Seeking a doctoral-level Research Scientist for community-engaged
cancer prevention and control research. The successful candidate
will assist Dr. Rachel Ceballos with planning, implementation, and
evaluation of cancer health equity research in close collaboration
with community partners to improve health outcomes of people who
are medically underserved, and communities historically
disproportionately affected by cancer. Our team uses mixed-methods
and community-engaged approaches to study the psychosocial impacts
of cancer, improve cancer screening rates, deliver culturally
appropriate cancer education, and support cancer survivors, among
other areas of focus.
Dr. Ceballos's team works closely with the Huntsman Cancer
Institute's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement ( OCOE ).
Huntsman Cancer Institute's COE efforts - which aims to improve
knowledge and health behaviors through screening, risk reduction
interventions, prevention education, promotion of clinical trials,
and engagement in research. The OCOE conducts community-engaged
clinical, population, and implementation science research that
focuses on health inequities, behavioral risk factors, cancer and
chronic disease, screening, and vaccination. Special populations of
interest include Latinx, American Indian/ Alaska Native, African
American, LGBTQ+, low socioeconomic status, and rural/frontier.
Developing research projects in scientific design, oversees project
implementation, data collection, data analyses, and interpretation,
presenting results and publishing manuscripts.
Collaborating with data in diverse, community-based settings in
both rural and urban areas throughout Utah and the five-state
(Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming) Mountain West. Occasional
evening and weekend hours as well as frequent regional travel to
community partner sites. This requires flexibility and ability to
drive one's own vehicle and University vehicles. Daily tasks can be
done in a hybrid working environment, with a mix of in-person
commitments, regional travel, and tasks that can be completed
virtually.

Responsibilities

Problem Solving This position may be involved with problems
requiring modifications of scientific methods. This position is
required to efficiently manage several research coordinators and
associates as well as to allocate resources to address the needs of
ongoing research projects, including clinical trials. Work
Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly
Continuously: Office environment. Often: Local travel to community
partner sites. Seldom: Nationwide travel for conferences and
research collaboration activities.
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required
Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking. Often:
Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking. The staff member
must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to
provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his
or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of
the principles of life span growth and development and the ability
to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as
described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or
other scientific discipline in a related field plus four years of
experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted
for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated
human relations and effective communication skills also
required.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated
requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers, and community by
